Laundry Detergent

The detergent I made last week has been working well. Our clothes - even the dirtier ones have been coming out clean. I still miss the smell of detergent and fabric softener but I am working on that. I wanted to show you what it looks like, s sort of gel-ish substance that does look a lot like egg-drop soup. No complaints thus far. Let me know if you try it - and how you might tweak it.

  1. Julie,
Would it work in a front loader that requires HE formula detergent?

  2. I read somewhere about adding a few drops of essential oil to give a scent. I think I will try this.

  3. I have been making this soap for a few months now and I LOVE it!! I really think it gets our clothes clean and it really helps our budget. If you can find it anywhere, I think the Fels Naptha soap works alot better - the only place I can find it is my Kroger. Maybe I can mail you a box full! I also add a little extra washing soda and Borax to my mix to get out the "kid dirt!"
Let us know if you figure out the fabric softener thing...in the winter I had HORRIBLE static!!

  4. So interesting!! I keep reading about people who are doing it; I might just have to try. I would miss the smell, too, though!

  5. Hey Girl! Just thought I'd let you know that I got those spikey dryer balls to use instead of conditioner and they are working fabulously!!!! The clothes are nice a soft and the dryer is drying even quicker than before. I haven't tried making the detergent yet mainly because I don't have the space in our compact living country to store a huge tub like that and I can't figure out how to cut the recipe down to just half a gallon or so at a time?? But if you want something to condition I would HIGHLY recommend the spikey balls! BTW, thanks for the heads up about the conditioner! The most worrying thing here is that that our bottles don't even state the ingredients in it and I can't get it on their website either! Decided it wasn't worth the risk!

  6. Hi There, I just found your website after following a post on http://grocerycartchallenge.blogspot.ca about handmade laundry soap. I was curious as to see if others have the same consistency as the one I make. I started using handmade a few months back after finding the quantity of the store-bought ones keep decreasing while remaining at the same price level. Another factor was the sewage maintenance man coming here and telling me that the soaps we previously used were to two brands that made the worst damage to our system. Anyhoo, I love using my soap and I even made some to be given out as gifts for kitchen or bridal showers.
For Deedee: I hope by now you have found a recipe to meet your need. If not, just send a message my way. :)
