A Song for My Sweetheart and Me

When I met my husband, we were so young. So many years have passed since August 27, 1988 - the day we met and eventually the same date that we married. We were so young - and knew so little about relationships, nothing about marriage or what it takes to really make it work, and we were in the eyes of everyone else, "destined for failure". He was a bit wild, and I was from a long line of broken marriages. Seventeen years later, I found a song that describes the journey that we have taken - and what it means to find the person you know God meant for you to be with - for better or worse - I am putting the lyrics here - but I will play the song for him later and tell him how much it means to me to have been by his side all these years - - -

God Blessed the Broken Road
by: Rascal Flatts

I set out on a narrow way - many years ago
Hoping I would find true love - along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two - wiped my brow, kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you
Every long lost dream - led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart - they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way - into your loving arms
This much I know is true
God has blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

I think about the years I spent - just passing through
I'd like to have the time I lost - and give it back to you
But you just smile and take my hand - you've been there you understand
It's all part of a grander plan - that is coming true
Every long lost dream - led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart - they were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way - into your loving arms
This much I know is true
God has blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you!

Just as a wee little footnote for those of you who are also children of the 80s - "our song" used to be appropriately Welcome to the Jungle by Guns 'n' Roses.
