Misunderstood

Do you ever feel like everything you say comes out all wrong or is misunderstood? Being so prolific with words - spoken or written - I tend to try to heap more words on the problem, hoping to bring understanding evidently only making it worse. I am going to try being quiet for a while, but I don't have much hope for success in this area, knowing my own track record for silence.

Having gotten one phone call and one email about this - I only intend to be quiet about one particular subject - at least on my blog. Sorry if I gave anyone undue cause for concern, and if I have disappointed those who were relieved! *wink*

Words of Affirmation

Last night I was blessed to be able to host a homeschool support group meeting for some really precious women. We have been slowly coming together - some new to the area, some new to homeschooling - and it has been really neat to see how we have been put together to become a group to support and encourage one another. My husband has seen my longing over the last year for a group like this to come together. My friend, Melody started a yahoo group earlier this year that was the catalyst for this meeting. It all went very well.
This morning I woke to this note - scrawled on a green napkin from my hubby. It means so much to me that he is proud of me - and his words are so sweet. I know that it has not been me but the Lord who has put us there for one another, but I will feel like I am floating all day because of this note from my husband!

Blogosphere Vernacular

Here is an observation I have made recently. I have been perusing blogs outside my typical circle. There are some funny, insightful women - mamas like me. Some homeschoolers, some not. Some Christians, some not. I have found some fascinating blogs, ones that I have bookmarked and want to read again and again. There are others that are, well, um not to be prudish but they make me feel like I need to take a shower after reading them. I am not sure when the f-word became such a popular adjective, or why one specific blogger has so many euphemisms that correlate to the kicking of an a-- with complete neglect of every other part of the body. How about wringing a neck once in a while, kicking a shin, or maybe pulling some hair? I live in the real world too. I am out in public. The vernacular that seems to permeate a certain segment of the blogging community is generally only heard on the streets in certain company. I am admittedly saying that I have a knee-jerk reaction to pain or frustration, and the words are always there whether they come out of my mouth or shoot through my brain. It isn't so much the words - because in my humble opinion - who decided what words were on "the list" of curse words - and yet at the same time, I strive not to offend others. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (or in this case the fingers type) - and it isn't the word but the malignant heart that is offensive. BUT seriously, can we, as bloggers, broaden our horizons in the scope of writing and language? It takes so little creativity to swim at the bottom of the toilet bowl.

Walking Dictionary

I have a very curious 9 year old boy. He has always asked a lot of questions - but lately his favorite has been, "What does ________ mean?" He is usually referring to a word in something he is reading, however it can come from the radio, television, a conversation he overhears, etc. I love it that he is so curious - but if I am going to be able to keep up - I think I will have to start reading the dictionary! It is so strange - there are many words that you are familiar with, and have an understanding of what they mean - but have difficulty defining.
How about you, what is the funniest, most persistent thing your children have asked?

Answer to Party Game #2

The Land of the Green Glass Doors is also known as the "land of doubles". Everything there has double letters.
There are books but no libraries.
There are buggies but no horses.
There are woods and trees and grass but no flowers.

I wish more of you had played it. It is one of my most favorite games. I learned it one year at camp from my pastor, Porky. It's gotta be fun when you're playing with a guy with a name like that! After he taught it to us, the women in our lodge stayed up late at night playing the game - and got up the next morning and had more examples!

Words of Wisdom From My Husband

My husband came home from work today - and told me had written something - not sure what to call it a poem or a saying -

Watch your thoughts - they become words
Watch your words - they become actions
Watch your actions - they become habits
Watch your habits - they become your character
Watch your character - it becomes your destiny
Watch your destiny - there's no turning back!

This reminds me of a famous quote I heard once in one of Porky's sermons - but I especially liked the way that he put it, AND the fact that he's writing! And how true it is that many character defects could have prevented had they only been caught in the "thought" stage, and weeded out of our lives!
