I love musicals. I can remember the very first one that ever stole my heart was Oliver! I was living in South Carolina with my dad at the time, and the place where I slept was the family room. I remember sitting in front of the console television crying as I watched Oliver ask for "more", giggle as he learned to pick-a-pocket-or-two to a catchy little tune, sobbed when he cried for his mother as he sang "Where is Love?" and felt my spirits soar with "Who Will Buy This Wonderful Morning". I could pretty much sing every word to every song even now. Thanks to the miracle of DVD I can watch it whenever I want.
There's Fiddler on the Roof, The Sound of Music, Scrooge, Rent, Chicago, Moulin Rouge, The Phantom of the Opera, High School Musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers- some of which I like more than others. Tonight we are watching Oklahoma - and it's pretty good.
What are some older movies that you like? I could use some recommendations. I want to rent some through Netflix - but I hate getting them home only to realize they are duds. Recommendations please??? Not just musicals - any older movies would be muchly appreciated.
Stars in My Crown
ReplyDeleteWhen Iw as growing up I watched a LOT of musicals. My mother is from Germany and was fascinated by them! My favorite as a kid was,
ReplyDelete"An American in Paris" and "Brigadoon" and "Meet Me IN St Louis". Although anything with Gene Kelly in it is awesome! I watched "On the Town" the other night! Right afterwards, "Easter Parade" with Fred Astaire and Judy Garland came on!
I studied Classical Ballet for 10 years growing up and when I was in high school (All-girls Catholic), I tried out for the part of Ado Annie in "Oklahoma" at St Louis University High (All-boy's Catholic). While my singing wasn't quite right, (how can I screw up Ado Annie? Heck, it's not Shirley Jones' part, for crying out loud!) I was in the dancing chorous. I have to say, that being in that musical production was one of my best memories from high school!

I went on an old movie kick a few years ago and discovered that I love Cary Grant! My favorites were...North by Northwest, Notorious, To Catch A Thief, and Father Goose (that one is was one of his last).
ReplyDeleteTHe best thing about old movies is that, for the most part, they are clean!
Enjoy!
Oh you got one of my favorites listed "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers"!! Dwayne bought me the sound track and the DVD for Valentine's Day! And then "One Night With The King" for our anniversary!! I personally love musicals too! One of my favorites is "My Fair Lady"!!
ReplyDeleteI love musicals also. Sound of Music has been one of my most loved one. I remember watching it at Christmas time every year growing up. I love Fiddler on the Roof and Oklahoma. I just watched Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and laughed through the whole thing. All the while my teen boy rolled his eyes and sighed heavily.
ReplyDeleteI just watched Ultimate Gift. Excellent! and Clean! Highly recommend it. It is brand new from Fox Faith.
Sargeant York is a great old movie with a good message! We watched it as a family and we were moved to tears a few times. And of course we love 7 brides for 7 brothers and Oklahoma.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kathie about "The Ultimate Gift"! We saw it at the theater when it first came out and recommended it to everyone, I even put in a plug for it on my blog!
ReplyDeleteAlong with that movie, if you haven't seen "The Last Sin-Eater", also a FoxFaith Fim, don't walk, RUN to the nearest Blockbuster and rent it! It is a beautifully done movie, presenting the Gospel message of Christ. Little Elliott from E.T. (Henry Thomas) plays a preacher! An awesome movie!
A classic that I completely forgot about:
Singing In The Rain!!!!!

I'll have to ask Grace...she's the musical expert at our house.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I put Gypsy in the musical recommendations. FABULOUS!
ReplyDeleteI really want to see "Breakfast At Tiffany's."
ReplyDeleteI got a little bit of chastising (playful) from Kelsey this afternoon for not including the following on my list:
ReplyDeleteThe King and I, Anything Goes, Godspell, Pippin, Into the Woods, Sabrina, Rear Window, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, With Six You Get Eggroll, All About Eve, The Man Who Knew too Much, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, The African Queen, From Here to Eternity.
