New Year's Food

As is tradition, we are having black eyed peas for dinner tonight. My mom always made black eyed peas and cornbread. During my stint as a cashier extraordinaire, I have learned from many many many customers all buying these little peas that you make them for luck, but for prosperity you make cabbage. So that's what I've been missing all these years. I am not superstitious, but I thought, what could it hurt. When in Rome..... so I tried to find some cabbage - cause I actually do like it prepared correctly, al dente and not resembling leafy shaped snot seasoned with onion and garlic, salt and pepper. Unfortunately, I waited too late, and there were no heads of cabbage to be found. What I ended up with was shredded cole slaw, and intend to make this, hoping it will bring me prosperity coupled with the lucky peas. Evidently you make cornbread with it just because it tastes good!
What do you eat on New Year's Day?

  1. Aw shucks! I made the black eyed peas today, but didn't know it was the cabbage that was supposed to bring the prosperity. I didn't have any cabbage. LOL

I wonder how these traditions got started. An interesting one I heard about this morning was from a friend who opens her door at midnight to let the old year out and welcome the new year in.

  4. We had steak, potatoes, green beans, and corn. How exciting is that???

Hubby's folks are in town. They're real meat and potatoes type people. It honestly didn't occur to me to go with tradition. Oh well... do they let you do any do- overs??

I want to have a lucky and prosperous new year, too!

  5. hmmmm, some of my friends make ham. Seems like a lot of us get Chinese take out... Today I made sausages and scones for a brunch and then told my family to eat lots at an open house we were at this afternoon as I didn't really want to have to cook dinner. Yup, I'm classy that way!

  6. We've always eaten cabbage rolls and I'm not sure how that tradition started because it goes back to grandparents and great-grandparents.

My maternal grandmother (who was born and raised in Alabama) always fixed black eyed peas. Since I live in the deep south now, I should add black eyed peas to my tradition too, but I'm the only one that likes them and I don't like them that much. :)

So I guess we'll be prosperous, but not lucky this year. I'm curious as to how that's gonna work out!

    Happy New Year!

  7. I cannot even remember what we had. How sad is that? It's only been two days. It wasn't cabbage or beans. I guess we won't be lucky or prosperous. Happy New Year!
